Concerto da Camera No 1

Additional Information

This work was originally written in 1967 during my final year at Birmingham School of Music. It is dedicated to an oboeist friend, Susan Peters, and her husband, Malcolm, who both played alongside me in the Midland Youth Orchestra. Having delivered the manuscript score to them, I forgot all about the work until 2019, when I suddenly resumed contact with Malcolm Peters and he returned the score to me (Susan having sadly passed away). I reconstructed it in 2021 but because I have used the original 1967 material, I have designated it Concerto da Camera No 1.

There are four movements:

1. Passacaglia

2. Inrtermezzo

3. Elegy

4. Finale.

The third movement includes a 19th century Welsh hymn tune, 'Llef' ('Cry'), by Griffith Hugh Jones, but there is nothing of special significance in that since I have known and loved the tune since my early teens and its inclusion in that context seemed appropriate at the time of composition.
