'Aus der Zauberküche', my 16th quartet (2016), was inspired by five Paul Klee paintings, all from the year 1927. I chose these paintings – Wasserfall, Junger Garten (Rhythmen), Garten am Bach, Abfahrt der Schiffe and Abenteurer-Schiff – because I saw ideas in them which I felt could become musical ideas, like the rushing of a waterfall turning into fast-flowing musical lines, or the idea of an adventurer ship inspiring music of excitement and (musical) danger.
Paul Klee’s Bauhaus students used to refer to his studio as “The Magic Kitchen” (die Zauberküche), which is where the title of the quartet comes from.
'Aus der Zauberküche' is dedicated to my wife Dušica Mladenović and the Anime Quartet.
