"Up Above the World", my 18th string quartet (2018), was written for the young Presto Quartet from Cork with funds from Cork County Council Arts Office.
The piece sets out to explore various astronomical phenomena in a way that allows the incorporation of a number of modern playing techniques, partly as an introduction to a contemporary musical language for young quartets who might not have played any modern music before.
The five movements are titled as follows:
1. Constellations
2. Pulsar
3.The Perseids
4. Event Horizon
5. 'Oumuamua
