Additional Information
Symphony No. 3 was composed during the various 'lockdowns' necessitated by the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, Covid-19. It was begun as a second wave of infections started to arise in the UK in September 2020 and was completed in short score in early November, when, sadly, numbers had increased considerably. It was written partly as a distraction and partly as a defiant reaction to the gloom and anxiety brought about by the health crisis. Its musical material is a combination of new and old and Its moods range widely, but an optimistic love of life dominates the Finale. The short score was revised and fully orchestrated in early 2025.
1. Allegro con brio
2. Allegretto (Gavotte)
3. Lento
4. Vivace
Movements 3 & 4 may be found in the file 'Symphony No. 3, Op. 34 (part two)'.
