During October and November of 2021, for some unaccountable reason, I felt the urge to compose a neo-baroque concerto grosso. My intention was to mix Handelian features with quirky harmonic patterns that would substitute for the circle-of-fifths progressions that are so characteristic of baroque music. In pursuing this aim, I drew upon music I had written as student exercises and end-of-term entertainment in the early 1970s. I did not feel the same concern about eccentrically developing my own pastiches as I would have done had I chosen an actual concerto grosso by Handel (as Schoenberg did in his Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra, freely composed after Handel’s Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 7).
