sonnet^5 combines heavy metal influences, new violin techniques, Shakespeare rap and plenty of emotion in the ultimate crossover piece. Lines from five of Shakespeare’s sonnets were chosen for their strength of sound, often with repeated words, and strength of meaning and expression. The words and music influence each other complimentarily and both show the strengths of tradition and modernity. The piece also intends to show the intensity with which the violin can be played and how versatile an instrument it is, fitting into almost all musical styles. The use of the voice is a direct link to the human emotions evoked by the piece, which are amplified by the stirring rhythms and captivating harmonies in the violins.
