Hymn to the Martyr is a work for solo organ based on the Gregorian hymn Aeterna Christi munera, and serves as an homage to Britain’s first Christian martyr, Saint Alban. Celestial Echoes is based on the concept of religious revelation, in particular, the divine revelation of Saint Alban as depicted in his hagiography. It is said that after sheltering a Christian priest in his home from Roman persecutors, over time, Alban found himself moved by the priest’s unwavering devotion to God and began emulating him, ultimately leading to his conversion to Christianity, and his martyrdom at the hands of the Romans.
