'Southwell' is an old hymn tune, set to the words "Lord Jesus think on me". Benjamin Britten incorporated it into his work 'Noye's Fludde'. I originally made a version for choir and strings, but in the absence of voices during Lockdown I rearranged their parts for brass ensemble and strings. Embracing the hymn is a preface and coda, using the opening motif from a Purcell anthem, "Hear my prayer, O Lord". Leaving aside the original religious context, I thought that both sets of words, were appropriate for our present predicament.
