Additional Information

"101" was commissioned for and premiered at the concert The Formosa Connection, given at the Orgelpark, Amsterdam on 28 April 2019, with Yung-Tuan Ku, percussion, Clare Gallagher, sound projection and Michael Bonaventure, organ.

The title of this piece refers to the skyscraper 101 Taipei, and its sounds are intended to evoke and celebrate the fantastic scale and daring of that amazing, rocket-like structure. It is scored for fixed media electronic audio, percussion (gongs, bass drum) and organ. The electronic audio contains a variety of processed vocal and phonetic samples, centred mainly around the articulation of the digits "1" "0" "1" in both Mandarin and English. After a somewhat dense and nebulous first three minutes, the music really starts to take off when the organ enters the scene, looping a cycle of majestic chords with inexorable, earthbound tread while the electronic sounds accelerate and float higher and higher, becoming ever more jagged and distorted before they disappear into space.
