Commissioned by American clarinetist, Dr. Christopher Nichols, with financial assistance from a Delaware Division of the Arts grant, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
The work was inspired by the composer's visit to the islands of Malta in June 2015. The work was premiered at the Fifth European Clarinet Festival in Ghent, Belgium, in September 2015.
