Tango and Milonga for String orchestra

Additional Information

This is a bi-tonal, Finnish-style tango and is set out for string orchestra.  (The original version is to be found as the slow movement of the Sinfonietta No. 4, set out for small orchestra.  There is no reason why a small sting ensemble, perhaps a couple of players per part, or even a string quartet, might not succeed.)  The challenge for the composer was to devise percussive effects using strings only: so players are asked to use rapid three-fingered pizzicato (triplo), whip-like effects sliding down the string very rapidly, bouncing the bow the whole length and then digging in, painfully hard, with the heel - strappare - as well as playing on the other side of the bridge.  Not all these effects are successfully realized in the MIDI realization - but the intention is there.  The milonga passages even include a fugue of sorts.
