This piece was written mostly in December 2020. Covid 19 infection and death rates were rising, but there was at the same time some optimism about vaccines becoming available in the New Year and many people were looking forward to a slight relaxation of restrictions on Christmas Day.
The general mood of the piece is one of optimism, and phrases of the chant sung in "I look from afar" (Advent Matin Responsary, after Palestrina's "Aspiciens a longe") appear quietly in the middle section and at the end.
