The Lady of the Snows

Notes from Album Sleeve:

In the fourth century, a pious Roman couple wished to donate their wealth to the Church - but in what form they they do so? Their dilemma was solved when the Virgin Mary appeared to them, entreating them to build a chapel dedicated to her wherever and whenever she gave them a sign. One August evening, after the blazing hot day, a light scattering of snow fell on the summit of the Esquiline Hill in Rome. The rich couple were sure it was the miracle they were waiting for, and they ordered a basilica to be built on the spot. Many centuries later, each year on 5 August at the conclusion of the Solemn Mass in the chapel (still popularly known as the Basilica of our Lady of the Snows) a shower of white rose petals is dropped from the dome, and at sunset, another artificial snowfall is staged in the square outside. The Virgin of the Snows is celebrated worldwide, and her appearance has inspired many more church buildings.
