Additional Information
Comissioned by Orchestra in the Shape of a Pear, Collatz workout is an instilation piece to be performed by 3-5 concurrent performers with an approximate duration of 2 hours.
This idea for this piece comes from one of many unsolved mathematical problems. This problem is named the Collatz conjecture. Each performance of this piece will create a unique experience. Having moments of serene stillness alongside frantic almost ecstatic climaxes. The audience is encouraged to become part of the piece moving around the space and being present for the unique moments created by the ensemble. The performers are free to move into the piece as they wish before completing a cycle of the numbers and their related patterns.
The collatz conecture is also known as the 3N+1 problem is a set of simple rules that derive a sequence of numbers. The conjecture states that any number chosen will create a sequence that collapses into a cycle of {4,2,1}. The musical nature of such a pattern is expressed in this piece using the pitches and rhythms of the notes.
