Serenata was composed for the Penzance Youth String Orchestra who are a high calibre group of young performers who often perform at national events and whose players frequently go on to study at the London Conservatoires. I wanted to write the piece at a level that would stretch them and yet would allow them to get inside the music; for this reason the piece is more immediately approachable than another string orchestra work of mine, Cocteau Dances. Serenata was first performed in Penzance in 2015.
