Additional Information
The title is the Latin name for a species of vine, Vitis flexuosa, that is flexuous, the growths curving in a wavy manner. This image was suggested by the medium of cello and organ, with the flexible cello line intertwining and in contrast with the steady tone of the organ sound. The activity at the opening (marked ‘Assertive; deliberate’) soon subsides into the interplay of more peaceful ideas; at the culmination of the piece, the assertions of the opening emerge again to form the exuberant conclusion.
Vitis Flexuosa was written in 2009 and was commissioned, with funds provided by the RVW Trust, by Rebecca Hewes and Julian Collings, to whom the work is dedicated.
