Three Miniatures of Ynys Lawd.

I. High Tide

II. Spring Tide

III. Ebb Tide

These miniatures were inspired by a visit to the island of Ynys Lawd (South Stack), Anglesey. I was captivated by the haunting beauty of the landscape and the magical atmosphere of the light, water and changing tides. 'High Tide' uses the crystal timbres of the piano, harp and celesta to capture shimmering shafts of light, whilst the tam-tam emulates the sound of swelling waves throughout the three movements. 'Spring Tide' explores ostinato figures and cross rhythms, aiming to recreate the rhythmic momentum of the tide. Its middle section also evokes the haunting sound of a fog bell from the island's lighthouse 'Ebb Tide' reflects the stillness of an open expanse of water. A solo harp line emerges before a string of parallel chords ebb away, leaving only the distant sound of the waves.
