V. Air & Variations
This piece dates from 1981 and was a last attempt by the composer to write accessible music using techniques derived from serialism. The Air & Variations with which the work concludes mixes a determinedly tonal melody with an unlikely collection of harmonies. It may suggest an ironic side to the jolly miller of Dee’s blithe disposition: he cares for nobody, but then nobody cares for him.
