My compositional practice focuses upon the appropriation of pre-existing materials and ideas to generate new performances that appear to work across the conventions of genre and style. A playful and superficially juvenile aesthetic displayed in the work allows me to present situations to the viewer/listener which are often inspired by everyday life, but with subtle alterations provided through the rituals of 'classical' performance practice.
Punk Rock Your My Big Cry Baby is one such piece that takes a childlike approach to its subject, which began as an enquiry into the tradition of setting poetry to music. Taking the poem by Allen Ginsberg, I used the punk cliché of three chord harmony to turn Orkest de Ereprijs into my 'backing band' in order to live out a whimsical teenage fantasy onstage. The simplistic and rhythmically repetitious shouting of the text is a reference to the 'teenage angst' associated with rock music.
