Additional Information
Lake Fryxell is aptly named after the lake of the same name in Antarctica, as the piece is inspired by its expansive white landscapes and frozen lakes. While these scenes are of incredible grandeur, it's hard to avoid the undercurrent of fragility due to the consequences of global warming. Nature is beautiful and we should be striving to take better care of it.
This piece was written during the second national UK lockdown, in which I hadn't left my local area in months. Although I had a lot of work to preoccupy myself with, the lack of true engagement with the outside world left me feeling incredibly static. This led to me spending multiple evenings 'travelling' on Google Maps, and exploring countries I regarded as being on the edge of the world, or relatively untouched by the effects of modern society, such as parts of Greenland, Alaska, Siberia, the Arctic circle and later on Antarctica.
Lake Fryxell was performed by the Fidelio Trio at Royal Holloway, London in April 2021. It was originally premiered in June 2021 during the Postgraduate Composition Showcase as part of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire's 2021 instalment of CODA Festival.
