The composer’s second symphony for brass band was composed during 1996–7. Like his previous brass band symphony it adopts the modest proportions of the eighteenth-century symphony, and is in four movements that follow the traditional pattern of Allegro, Adagio, Scherzo and Finale. The work might be thought of as part of a ‘hidden tradition’ – that of symphonies like Weill’s Second Symphony and William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony. These works attempt to incorporate popular material into a design that offers a chance to develop ideas in unexpected ways and to introduce dramatic conflicts and resolutions.
