Devil’s Gorge

Additional Information

These recordings were inspired and named after a fascinating location in North-East Wales, which took place in 2006.

Devil's Gorge can be found at the Loggerheads Country Park situated on the Flintshire-Denbighshire border. The area is also the location of long abandoned mines.

The River Alyn runs by the side of the infamous Leete Path which leads to Devil's Gorge. It's interesting that the river sometimes disappears underground at a certain area, due to the cracks in the limestone and then emerges back overground at a location quite a distance away. Surprisingly, there are no 'official' folklore tales or legends about this area considering the name of the gorge.

The three tracks on the album were constructed from the following acoustic sound sources~ prepared acoustic guitar, violin, bowed cymbals and bowed metal sheets. These were all recorded in the cave at Devil's Gorge with a Zoom H4.

In addition to these sound sources, some natural location recordings were also used which were recorded within the same area.

Some of these recordings were then processed with various analogue and digital devices and some were left untouched.

Parts One and Two were from the same recording sessions during July to September 2006, whilst 'Subterranean Foe' was recorded in January 2007 and hopefully provides a suitable intermission.

Each track can be recognised as a sort of 'remote sound installation' and hopefully provide it's own sonic folklore to the gorge or to any other similar location which fires up intrigue and imagination.
