In the mid-1970s I became very interested in the music of Antonio Vivaldi and inspired by his concerti for mandolin, I wrote a chamber concerto for mandolin and guitar duo and string orchestra, dedicating it to my friends, the mandolin virtuoso, Hugo D'Alton and the guitarist and composer, Freddie Phillips. The work, in the traditional three movements, bears witness to my interest at the time in atonality and serial technique and my training as a contrapuntal composer. The movements are entitled Rondo, Canzona and Danza, the central slow movement intending to evoke those of Vivaldi which seem to suggest a nocturnal serenade on the Venetian lagoon.
In revising some of my works in 2021, I revived and revised two earlier chamber concerti so that this one, originally designated Concerto da Camera No 1, is now retitled Concerto da Camera No 3
In the early 21st century, the work attacted the attention of the mandolinist, Daniel Ahlert and his partner, guitarist Birgit Schwab, who gave the world premiere (as Concerto da Camera No 1) in 2005 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany with the Bürsches Kammerorchester conducted by Arndt Winkelmann.
There are three movements:
