Kámea Németh

Biography

Kámea Németh was born in Budapest and moved to the UK when they were one year old. They are now 20 and studying composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. As a 21st century composer, they aim to break the social constructs of 'traditional' music while maintaining connections to certain ‘conventions’. Some ways in which they like to do this is by experimenting with their use of musical notation, such as aleatoric and graphic notation. Throughout their work, Kámea likes to include elements of whimsy and playfulness. Still, at the same time, they like their work to say something, whether that be a bold political statement or a wacky re-telling of a story from their everyday life.

As well as a composer, Kámea is a classically trained singer. They joined the ExCathedra Junior and Senior Academy in 2013 and have enjoyed opportunities including performing in the Nutcracker, Carmina Burana and having the solo role of Sankta Lucia in the annual Sankta Lucia concert. They also enjoy singing jazz and were the singer of the University of Birmingham School’s jazz band. Currently, Kámea is a member of the RNCM chamber choir and sings for two jazz bands.

Since they have such a love for singing, Kámea writes a lot of their music for voice. Recent projects include a premiere performance by Valette Ensemble and Ventis of their piece 'Thrice-shelled trickster with a threadbare gown'. Future plans include writing a piece for the Cardinal Quintet.

Some of Kámea's musical influences include Ben Nobuto, Björk, Anna Meredith, Esperanza Spalding, Unloved, Kate Bush and Frank Zappa.

Five words to describe Kámea's musical style are camp, cultish, satirical, colourful and honest.
