Kerrin Tatman

Biography

I am a composer, multi-instrumentalist, puppeteer and creative producer based in Newcastle upon Tyne, specialising in inter-disciplinary projects, arts development and visual theatre. I write a variety of contemporary classical and neo-folk pieces for stage, film and concert hall, and perform as a cellist, pianist, singer and accordionist in a diverse array of creative settings.

In 2008 I won the National Centre for Early Music Young Composers Competition for 'Stabat Mater', which was performed by the Tallis Scholars in Beverley Minster. (“Extremely impressive”, Peter Phillips, Tallis Scholars Director). Although I have been composing since I was 12, this opportunity at aged 18 marked my first real step into the world of being a freelance creative and I haven’t looked back since.

In 2013 I musical directed and arranged Joe Hisaishi's score for an international stage production of Studio Ghibli's film 'Princess Mononoke' that toured to London and Japan. I conducted the live ensemble from behind the cello to audiences totalling over 8,000 across the run.

Between 2016-2019 I played with contemporary classical ensemble Aeyther, which resulted in studio album 'Into the Forest' and performances around the country including the Amy Johnson Festival at Hull Minster. During this time I also completed a number of score commissions for circus, dance and theatre clients including Circus Central, Let’s Circus, The D Project, Georgian Theatre Royal, Theatre Space NE and Life & Limb Puppets. ("Multi-instrumentalist Kerrin Tatman was excellent." The Stage).

My ‘Fantasy for Viola and Orchestra’ was premiered by the Hull Philharmonic in May 2019, with BBC New Generation Artist and Borletti-Buitoni Trust fellow solo violist Timothy Ridout. Just before lockdown in 2020, I collaborated with lyricist and songwriter Rosie Bristow to produce ‘Rum Punch’ - a genre-bending full length musical featuring circus, puppetry and dance.

During 2022 I wrote a score for The D Project’s dance show ‘HEDGE’, which toured around the North East including to Dance City. My latest project was a collaboration with lyricist Rosie Bristow to write 'Requiem for a Fading World' as one of SageGateshead's Artists in Residence 2022-2023. The Requiem merges the traditional Latin text with secular, original English lyrics to tell a fantastical, environmentally-themed narrative for modern day audiences.
