Austerity

“Austerity” was composed over three weeks in February/March 2008. The piece was conceived as an adjunct to Edges, and is based upon a poem I wrote entitled “Weather of Her Soul” [this can be seen on my website: www.rickbirley.com]. An old woman, perhaps the Madwoman of Cork herself, stares at her image in a mirror and travels over her wrinkled features through the dark centres of her own eyes and into the depths of her soul beyond, into the vastness of her inner self.
