Additional Information
Naïvement-Rondeau was commissioned by the International Guitar Foundation for the What Guitar Trio and first performed by them at the London Guitar Summit in 2018.
This piece is another work of mine that is influenced by the style of Couperin and the aesthetic of that period (in a broad way; to include Watteau, Diderot, and others). The main sections of the rondo form are at a moderate tempo and marked ‘Naïvement’ (a favourite marking of Couperin’s) interpreting the word in its original Latin meaning of ‘natural’, but also, as Diderot has it ‘…all that is naïve is true, but with a truth that is alluring, original, and rare’. The two episodic sections are faster, dramatic, and more unsettling.
