streams, waterfall, pool begins with three streams coming together to form a river. The first stream is represented by the flute with melody devised from the whole tone scale. The second stream comes in the violin, with melodic material derived from an octatonic scale. The third stream is in the cello, based on a pentatonic scale.
The river becomes more turbulent and rapids develop. The rapids lead us to the waterfall, represented by crashing double stops in the strings, as the water falls from a great height onto the rocks below. The flute part shows the water falling using downward glissandi, with a jet whistle effect used at the cadence to show splash.
At the bottom of many waterfalls is a still pool of water. This pool reflects the surrounding trees, flowers and clouds. The pool is portrayed musically with the opening stream melodies in mirrored inversion and augmented rhythms.
