Phil studied horn at Wells Cathedral School before graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester University. During this time he studied composition with Richard Baker and John Casken. He currently holds the position of Assistant Director of Music at Stockport Grammar School where he continues to compose and arrange music for wind and brass ensembles, as well as teaching, conducting and accompanying.
