Hailing from Hockley, Essex, Matthew Elderton-Lewis (b. 2001) is a composer whose infectiously passionate personality and musical talent is continuing to emerge onto the contemporary classical and multimedia stage of the creative arts. With his style being described as both idiosyncratic and memorably melodic, Matthew started to gain recognition after being awarded the ‘MMus Prize for Outstanding Achievement’ for his postgraduate degree.

Matthew has been composer-in-residence for Royal Holloway Picture Gallery, has been commissioned by Carla Rees for PLAY! Festival 2023 and Belle Quartet. He has received a number of performances and workshops for his concert compositions by Ligeti Quartet, Phacelia Ensemble, Riot Ensemble, Chroma Ensemble, Belle Quartet, LCM Big Band and the collegiate Royal Holloway Chapel Choir.​

As well as his increasing concert portfolio, Matthew is also a successful multimedia composer working on several adverts, competitions, trailers and short films. Most recently, he worked on Paul G Raymond’s The Suicide which is set to release on the short film circuit later this year.

​Alongside being a composer, he is also a successful conductor, leading ensembles such as LCM Camerata, members of Royal Holloway Symphony Orchestra and Triple H Community Choir in both performative and collaborative projects through traditional, contemporary and archived repertoire. Matthew’s conducting prowess extends to conducting records with him conducting Abbey Road Studios. Most recently, he was appointed as conductor for the Everest 1922: Audio-visual Perspectives conference where his involvement saw him conduct recently rediscovered music composed by an explorer upon their return from the first filmed expedition to Mt Everest.

In 2023, Matthew completed a Master of Music (with distinction) under the tuition of Christian Mason and Nathan James Dearden as well as Samantha Fernando and Tonia Ko and was supported by Headley Trust Scholarship. In 2022, he graduated from London College of Music, University of West London with a Bachelor of Music Composition (with first-class honours) under the tuition of Francis Pott, Simone Spagnolo and David Osbon. He also completed a LLCM Licentiate Conducting Diploma (with merit) under the tuition of Dwight Pile-Gray and Simon Rigby.
