Biography
Jo Quail is an internationally acclaimed award-winning composer and virtuoso cellist from London, UK. Equally at home on stage solo, with bands – or in collaboration with choir and orchestra – she combines an eloquent mastery of her instrument with innovative looping techniques, to realise her complex, evocative music for audiences worldwide. Primarily a contemporary classical / avant-garde artist Jo’s music appeals to a far broader crowd; in the words of Metal Hammer “Jo breathes new life in to the cello, for the first time making classical music’s long-standing influence on metal a two-way street”.
Inspired by the visual arts as much as by fellow composers, Jo cites Barbara Hepworth and Georgia O’Keefe as key influences, alongside the diverse music of Debussy, Pärt, Mick Gordon, and Cardiacs among many others. As a result, she freely crosses the boundaries between genres, awakening listener emotions, and taking audiences into uncharted territory with each concert. Her exuberant, celebratory performance style has won her a fanbase in the contemporary classical world as well as among enthusiasts of post-rock, metal and electronica.
As a soloist Jo has performed extensively through Europe and internationally; venues and festivals include Hellfest (FR), the Melbourne Recital Centre (AUS) and the Royal Festival Hall (UK). She is a highly sought after guest artist for both live and recorded work and has collaborated with acts as diverse as Caspian, Damo Suzuki, Enslaved, Emma Ruth Rundle, Eraldo Bernocchi, FM Einheit, God Is An Astronaut, MONO, My Dying Bride, Myrkur, O.R.k, and Poppy Ackroyd, as well as touring with many of these artists and others including Amenra, Boris, Heilung, and Wardruna.
