Shama Rahman

Biography

Shama Rahman is a compser, sitar player and scientist.

Shama's music draws inspiration from her Bangladeshi roots, her childhood desert landscapes of the Middle East and her move to the UK where everything she experienced beforehand collided with Londons vibrant urban energy and musical characters. Her work also often explores London's multiculturalism, through a range of genre bending styles she brings out through her compositions and sitar playing.

Shama removes the Sitar from its traditional context - bringing in elements of jazz, hip hop, worldbeats, folk story telling, beat poetry and Western/Indian classical music.

She was the first Sitar player to perform on ice in the Antarctica where she was invited on an expedition with the first Antarctic Biennale.

Shama Rahman has previously written for the British Music Collection
