Biography

Elgar Howarth (1935-) is an English conductor, composer and trumpeter born in Cannock, Staffordshire. He went to Manchester University, where he, and other composers studying there (most noteably Harrison Birtwistle and Peter Maxwell Davies), formed New Music Manchester. He has a successful career in conducting, having worked with all major British orchestras. Being a trumpeter, his compositions are mostly writen for brass instruments, and especially for brass band. He is also known for arranging Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition for brass band.
