Julian Dale

Biography

I'm mainly self-taught, but had early encouragement & guidance from Peter Wiegold, Oliver Knussen, Gwyn Pritchard & Michael Finnissy. Listened to music of all kinds, while playing in rock bands, jazz groups & orchestras. Won the prize for young composers at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival rather a long time ago. Have not been much in the public eye, but have continued composing, sometimes to commission. Many amateur performances, especially of music for strings; a smaller number of professional performances, including Radio 3 broadcasts. I play a very wide variety of music, from orchestral to free improvisation, on double bass & cello, sing (baritone) and conduct (mainly amateur) orchestras.

'A refined ear & an assured technique... his piece contained a quality often lacking in contemporary music: it was memorable.' - Yorkshire Post

'His technical fluency is impressive' - Andrew Clements in Financial Times
