Often I Sigh is written for a cappella SATB.
My inspiration is the opening 3 lines of the medieval English poem entitled ‘Wynter Wakeneth’, which is as follows:
Wynter Wakeneth al my care,
Nou this leves waxeth bare;
Ofte I sike ant mourne...
When hit cometh in my thought...
The modern English translation of the text is:
Winter awakens all my sorrow,
Now these leaves grow bare;
Often I sigh and mourn...
When I come to think...
After the opening 16 bars, the middle section alternates between 3 four beats and 2 four beats to the bar. A recapitulation of the opening theme returns to end the piece.
This is a companion piece to All My Sorrow for wind, horns and percussion. Both pieces may be performed together in either order.
