A Cradle Song is written for a cappella SATB.
My original inspiration was to write this as a Christmas Carol. The piece is medatitive and simple in style.
The text is ‘A Cradle Song’ from ‘Songs of Innocence’ by William Blake. The title suggests a lullaby, however, themes of sorrow weave through the poem and I have explored this through the slow tempo and simplicity of the repeated melodic phrases.
The music is strophic in construction with two contrasting sections. I have written it in five crotchets to the bar, with a repeated contrasting section alternating between two and three crotchets to the bar.
