All My Sorrow is written for mixed wind ensemble with horns and percussion: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, four horns, timpani in C and tubular bells.
My inspiration is the opening of the medieval English poem entitled ‘Wynter Wakeneth’.
After the opening 16 bars, the middle section alternates between 3 four beats and 2 four beats to the bar. A recapitulation of the opening theme returns to end the piece.
This is a companion piece to Often I sigh for a cappella SATB. Both pieces may be performed together in either order.
