Additional Information

This is a piece for solo ‘cello, lasting just under 3 minutes.

It is prefaced by a quote from the Confessions of St. Augustine, (Book 13): ‘For Thou, O our God, shalt lighten our darkness: from Thee riseth our garment of light; and then shall our darkness be as the noon day’.

The ‘darkness’ is expressed initially using much double stopping. There follows a short interlude (pizzicato and tremolos) which leads to a more dance-like section that expresses the ‘lightness’. The piece ends ecstatically in a very high register.
