Incendiaries – for mixed ensemble (oboe, soprano sax, untuned percussion, vibraphone, piano & double bass). Dedicated to Zoë A Padley. This short piece was composed for a workshop with the Workers Union Ensemble (conductor – Ben Oliver) at the University Of Sussex on 19th Feb 2015. The work is entirely constructed from a short sequence of intervals (b2, 2, 3, b3) that form a harmonic field. When played horizontally, they form rolling, melodic lines. When stacked vertically, however, they form small explosives that disrupt the continuity of the melodic material. Written in Brighton, January 2015.
