Additional Information

Forms Entangled, Shapes Collided was written as part of a collaboration between contemporary music ensemble Psappha and choreographer Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre, Leeds.  The piece toured nationally throughout 2013.

The work is in six sections that run without a break:

1: Fragmentary eventually becoming fixed –

2: Sensual intertwining of disparate lines becoming unified but fractious -

3/4 (a double section): low, gruff leading to high, penetrating, mercurial -

5: Sections of intense but faltering movement halted by tense stasis leading to -

6: Kinetic, driven, eventually exploding into tendrils dissipating into nothingness

The composition is influenced by ideas from evolutionary biology - mutation, copying errors, small cellular division, heredity, high and low fidelity. The idea proposed by the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus (460 BCE to 370 BCE) that

Everything existing in the universe is the fruit of chance and necessity

is an ever-present concept in my work as a whole. It underpins much of my compositional process and philosophy.
