Biography

Gordon Phillips (1908-91) was born at Eton and educated privately, continuing his studies at Nottingham University.  He was assistant organist at St. John's, Smith Square and subsequently organist and director of music at All Saints, Knightsbridge.

As organist of All Hallows-by-the-Tower in London he gave more than 3,200 lunchtime recital and was also senior professor of organ and harpsichord at the London College of Music.  He was well-known as a recitalist, composer and teacher, and promoted early English organ music with the 'Tallis to Wesley' series which he edited and which was published by Hinrichsen.
